The Underwriting Technical Assistant (UTA I) position is responsible for the issuance of various transactions using a variety of systems, resources and tools provided. All transactions must comply with operating policies and procedures established by Millers and per State Laws/Regulations. This position requires excellent organization and time management skills as well as unwavering accuracy and attention to detail. They must be able to readily adapt and adjust to workflow/production changes. This position also requires the ability to communicate effectively with underwriting staff and peers.
Essential Job Functions
- Ability to interpret processing instructions from Underwriting
- Issue New Business and Renewal Policies for all product lines as instructed by Underwriting
- Process Endorsements for all product lines
- Process Cancellations and Reinstatements for all product lines
- Process Renewal and Endorsement Quotes as instructed by Underwriting
- Process production items assigned to workflow per established goals
- Obtain guidance/direction from Team UTA II/Underwriting on questions/problems to avoid production delays
- Peer to peer training to support UTAII training and/or onboarding of new department employees
- Other duties as assigned

Lead the identification, evaluation, and selection process of new agency appointments. Coordinate a unified message to Millers agency partners. Responsible for agency inquiries and issues resolution through securing a successful solution. Responsible for agency management including the segmentation of agencies, commission structure, incentives and other rewards, rehabilitation and other corrective actions as needed. Determines reasons for and frequency of agency reviews. This position will also lead the Riverside Brokerage operation. This would include serving as Millers champion for the evolving group of third-party insurance and fee-based products that enhance the Millers total solution concept.
Essential Job Functions
- Lead and coordinate the agency review process by utilizing the agency segmentation model and process in partnership with Underwriting and other appropriate parties.
- Facilitate business forums/meetings with key agency partners to strengthen relationships among the agents, customers and Millers Mutual
- Lead the new agency process including the prospecting of new agencies and the administration and coordination of appointments
- Monitor agency performance trends. Ensure follow-through on action items, including terminations and rehabs. Assist and provide guidance to staff when necessary.
- Support the process of attracting and engaging existing and prospective customers, help generate leads and collaborate with other areas to establish and enhance Millers’ marketplace credibility
- Lead, coordinate and distribute profit sharing, information about commissions, production incentives, changes in product offerings and/or underwriting appetite, and policies and procedures in a way that best portrays and strengthens the agency/underwriter relationship. Resolve agency agreement and profit sharing disputes in collaboration with Underwriting and other appropriate departments
- Coordinate and plan applicable education and training for agency partners and for Millers staff for both Millers and for Riverside Brokerage
- Coordinate the Science of Sales process for all agency and customer-facing roles.
- Develop and manage Riverside products and services
- Identify and secure needed new products with input from the marketplace that enhance the total solution concept
- Partner with Marketing to develop a timely message for each product
- Evaluate risk/reward tradeoffs and negotiate arrangements that provide benefit to customers, agency partners and Millers
- Develop an annual sales and marketing plan to drive growth and profit for Riverside
- Manage the Riverside Broker network to ensure Millers standards are continuously followed and to achieve the financial goals of Riverside. This includes taking action on agencies or brokers not performing to expectations or standards.
The Hardware and Infrastructure Administrator is at the heart of ensuring the organization’s technology runs seamlessly and efficiently. This role involves managing, monitoring, and maintaining company hardware, servers, and infrastructure setups. This position demands a mix of in-depth technical expertise and broad infrastructure knowledge to provide stable, responsive, and agile infrastructure solutions to meet business objectives.
Essential Job Functions
The Hardware and Infrastructure Administrator will demonstrate competencies across four key dimensions:
- Infrastructure Maintenance
- Administer, monitor, and deploy infrastructure components such as routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, and storage devices.
- Ensure all infrastructure components are correctly integrated and interconnected.
- Backup and Disaster Recovery
- Implement and manage backup solutions, ensuring the integrity and recoverability of critical data.
- Participate in disaster recovery tests, ensuring the organization can recover data and systems in case of emergencies.
- Updates and Patch Management
- Regularly update systems firmware, apply patches, and ensure all hardware components are up-to-date and secure.
- Coordinate with vendors and other IT personnel for problem resolution.
- Documentation and Compliance
- Maintain comprehensive documentation related to hardware and infrastructure configurations, procedures, and changes.
- Ensure hardware and infrastructure setups comply with company policies and regulatory standards.

In this role, agents in your territory will depend on you as Millers Mutual is known for our singular commitment to multifamily housing. Our deep understanding of the exposures endemic to the niche means thorough coverage for property owners—and reassurance amid the anxiety of emergencies. You will be responsible for the production, retention and profit of commercial lines business utilizing advanced technical underwriting ability.
In line with our lead-from anywhere philosophy, you’ll be expected to use your sharp decision-making skills to determine risk acceptability and pricing. Furthermore, we ask that you prioritize providing prompt, accurate, courteous, and professional services to our agents and fellow employees. This position requires a person with excellent soft skills including but not limited to negotiating, sales acumen, and organizational skills to generate and maintain effective producer and customer relationships. Additionally, you will collaborate with the underwriting team and leaders to advise on market trends that may need attention.
Essential Job Functions
- Manages a book of business for assigned agencies and is responsible for overall profit and growth of the book. Utilizes all present and future underwriting tools and resources.
- Reviews and underwrites individual applications for new and renewal business for commercial lines accounts within established authority level. Evaluates exposures to loss, determines pricing, and determines acceptability of risk in accordance with company guidelines. Documents details of underwriting decisions, while maintaining all supporting information, records, and data in accordance with audit standards.
- Reviews results of underwriting file reviews, makes needed file/process adjustments and applies lesson-learned moving forward.
- Notifies agencies of adverse decisions, underwriting requirements, status and declinations. Answers questions from agencies, policyholders or other external contacts and escalates issues to management as necessary. Negotiates with agents to reach positive and profitable outcomes.
- Delivers quotes, terms and conditions to the agent. Have ongoing negotiations with the agent until the renewal order is received and then sends the renewal to be processed.
- Orders and reviews inspections and prepares recommendation letters.
- Establishes and maintains effective communication externally (between agents and company) and internally (within the company) regarding underwriting procedures and practices, growth/profit goals and objectives, and agency relations. Travels to visit agencies and customers throughout the year.
- Keeps current on state/territory issues and regulations, industry activity and trends and shares this information with team members, particularly their Underwriting Leader.
- As directed, conducts special studies and projects regarding underwriting procedures and practices. Submits recommendations to improve department results, including coverage, pricing, or competitive issues.
- As requested by the Underwriting Leader, plans, and facilitates the Underwriting Meetings.
- Assists the Underwriting Leader in training and mentoring other underwriting team members.
- Maintain an operating knowledge of Millers’ standardized hardware, software programs, third party software, and processing procedures.
- Performs other functions as assigned to support operations. (e.g. perform risk surveys, takes first notice of loss on catastrophe claims etc.)
Qualifications/Requirements
- A minimum of three years of property and casualty commercial lines underwriting experience OR consistent demonstration of success as an Underwriter – Level 1.
- A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university OR commensurate experience.
- Possesses a CPCU, CIC, or AU designation OR is willing to attain one of these designations.
- Demonstrates strong negotiation and sales management skills.
- Strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills resulting in the ability to interact with all employee levels in the organization and with customers.
- Demonstrates strong customer service, organizational and analytical skills.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
